Affluent Travelers to Spend Up Big in 2012

New research has shown that 40% of American affluent travelers plan to spend more money on travel this year than last.

Experiences Bring Satisfaction

Much of the growth in travel is a result of the realization by affluent travelers that experiences are where satisfaction truly lies.

The majority of luxury consumers say their greatest pleasure and satisfaction from their wealth does not come from material things they own and hoard but from their experiences.

Ultra-affluent, Young Spending More

The research shows that the people who are planning the most travel are the “ultra-affluents” (those earning $200,000 or more) and the “young affluents” (those under 45).

People who have more money are going to be more open to spending money on travel, while the younger affluents in all of our income sectors have a greater propensity to indulge in luxury travel.

Relaxation Tops Travel Goals

Many American affluent travelers who work hard feel the stress of everyday life, so they look forward to taking well earned breaks on holidays. When planning holidays they look for destinations that provide stress relief and relaxation. The other main reason for travel is to spend time with family who have moved to different parts of the country to pursue their chosen career path.

Last-minute Decision Makers

Luxury travelers often make last-minute decisions and will go on a holiday with little advance time. However, some still prefer to plan well in advance to get the best deals.

Staying Close or Going Very Far

American affluent travelers are preferring nearby places in America that involve less travelling, with U.S.A. domestic cities, Alaska, Hawaii and the Caribbean being the most popular..

American affluent travelers looking for something a little different are prepared to travel further. Australia and New Zealand are the most popular destinations, followed by Japan and China.
